History of the Thompsontown Municipal Authority
The water system was first piped into town in the year 1910. The man in charge of the operation was John Boyer. 3 businessmen from the town bought the rights to it. In late 1914, it was sold to Merrill Schlegel, who managed it until 1946, when he sold it to Lee Shirk. Today it is known as the Thompsontown Municipal Authority. The purpose of the Authority is to accommodate further growth and development and to insure the service needs of the residents. In 1963, the Authority received their first federal grant to municipalities to construct a new 150,000 gallon reservoir. In 1971 the Authority began investigating the addition of a sanitary sewer system. With a Federal Grant of $485,000 work was started in May 1975 and completed in June 1976 with a total cost of a little over 1 million dollars. It was designed for a capacity of 105,000 gallons per day.
Today the Authority services approximately 375 connections, services a population of around 1000 with water and sewer systems. The Authority continues to improve the water & sewer systems with updated improvements year after year. During 2002-03, the water main in the Delaware Creek was replaced, 2 new wells were drilled, replaced 900 feet of water main on East Main Street, installed a new waste water grinder at the Treatment Plant and installed a new master water meter at the Reservoir. In 2015 a new sewer plant was constructed and in 2019 a pump house was constructed on West Main Street to help increase pressure for customers at the west end of town. Currently the Authority oversees 4 wells, sewer treatment plant, 27 fire hydrants, pump house and approximately 7 miles of water lines.
